THE FARMER

The farmers who grow crops like corn, wheat, soy beans, beets and potatoes are called crop farmers. Farmers who raise animals like cows are called livestock or dairy farmers and those who raise chickens are called poultry farmers.

Crop farmers have the responsibility of deciding what to plant and when to plant. They have to make certain the soil (fancy word for dirt) is rich in nutrients (fertilized) to ensure a healthy crop. They have to till the soil and plant the seeds. Crop farmers then have to monitor the growing plants for insects and other pests. On smaller farms, scarecrows help keep away birds. When the crops are ripe, the farmer harvests (picks the crops), packages, stores and then sells what he has grown.

Many farmers grow a combination of crops like corn and beans, wheat and asparagus, or cotton and barley. This helps ensure that if a crop fails because of bad weather or disease, the other crop will still be good for harvesting.

During the growing and harvesting season, crop farmers usually work from sunrise to sunset. During the winter, they plan for the spring planting and repair their tools.

Livestock, dairy and poultry farmers are responsible for feeding and caring for their animals. Plus, they maintain the barn, coops, pens, fences and other farm buildings. These farmers also decide which animals to breed to produce more meat, milk and eggs. When the animals weigh enough and are ready to go to market, the farmer decides which animals to sell.

Livestock, dairy and poultry farmers work all year long. The animals must be fed and given fresh water every day. Dairy farmers have cows to milk.Just when the work is almost finished, there is all that poop to scoop.

Farm work can be dangerous. Tractors and other farm machinery can cause serious injury so it is necessary to pay attention and be alert while working.Modern machines like tractors and combines make the work easier than in the days before gasoline engines. In the past, farmers used their animals, oxen(big cows) and draft horses, to pull plows and wagons.

Farming is hard work, but farmers like working outdoors and making a living off the land. Most farmers work for themselves and enjoy the independence and living in a rural area (the country).

Red Barn Farm has been in operation since 1990. It is an authentic farm that offers a safe and peaceful environment that is home to a variety of crops and animals.
